Online Slot Stake Limit: The £5 and £2 UK Rules Explained Clearly

Players placing chips on a green casino table during a game

The online slot stake limit in Great Britain is £5 per game cycle if you are 25 or older, and £2 per game cycle if you are between 18 and 24. The £5 limit went live on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025, and both apply to every casino licensed by the Gambling Commission. The online slot stake limit covers slots only; roulette, blackjack and other casino games are not included.

This talk explains how the limit is measured, what counts as a slot, how it handles features and gambles, and what it means in practice. All details come from the Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance.

What Is a Game Cycle?

The limit applies to the total you stake in a game cycle, not just the button you press. The Commission defines a game cycle as running from the moment you start a game until all the money staked has been lost, or all the money won has been paid or made available to you. Any extra staking offered inside that cycle counts towards the same limit. Separately, there must be at least 2.5 seconds between the start of one slot game cycle and the next.

Which Games Does the Stake Limit Cover?

It covers online slots: reel-based games played online, where reels or similar moving images decide the result. The Commission’s guidance is explicit that the limits are for online slots only and do not apply to other casino games such as roulette or blackjack. Those games still have table limits set by each casino, but no legal per-game cap of this kind.

How Does the Limit Work With Features and Gambles?

The Commission gives worked examples. A customer aged 27 who stakes £5 cannot be offered any further staking until that game cycle ends. If the same customer stakes £2, they could be offered up to £3 more within the cycle, making £5 in total. A 19-year-old who stakes £2 has reached the limit for that cycle.

A feature that asks you to risk a prize you have just won, without staking any new money, does not break the limit. In the Commission’s example, a £5 stake that wins a prize which the player then gambles and loses still counts as £5 staked in total.

What Does the Limit Mean for Your Spending?

A stake cap limits the size of each game, not the total you can spend, because the total depends on how many games you play. At the minimum pace of one game cycle every 2.5 seconds, even modest stakes add up quickly over an hour. That is why limits on deposits and time still matter. Our session cost calculator shows how stake, speed and the house edge combine.

How Do Casinos Know Which Limit Applies to You?

From your verified age. Every licensed casino has to verify how old you are and who you are before your first bet, and the stake limit that applies to you follows from that check. If you are 24 when you open an account, the £2 limit applies until you turn 25. Read more about checks in our UK casino rules track.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest stake allowed on a UK online slot?

Players aged 25 or older can stake up to £5 per game cycle, a rule that began on 9 April 2025. Players between 18 and 24 can stake up to £2 per game cycle, a rule that began on 21 May 2025. The limits apply to every online slot offered by a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission.

Does the stake limit apply to roulette and blackjack?

No. The Gambling Commission’s guidance says the stake limits are for online slots only and do not apply to other casino games such as roulette or blackjack. Those games are still subject to each casino’s own table limits and to the general rules every licensed operator must follow.

Can a slot offer extra bets during a feature?

Only up to the limit for that game cycle. A player aged 25 or over who has staked £2 could be offered up to £3 more within the same cycle, but someone who has already staked £5 cannot be offered more until the cycle ends. Gambling a prize without new money does not count as an extra stake.

Why are the limits lower for 18 to 24-year-olds?

The government’s consultation response confirmed a lower £2 limit for adults aged 18 to 24 alongside the £5 limit for older adults, and the Gambling Commission applies it through a licence condition. The limit follows your verified age, so it changes automatically when you turn 25.

In a Sentence

Online slots in Great Britain are capped at £5 per game cycle, or £2 if you are 18 to 24, while other casino games are not covered; the cap limits each game, so your own budget and deposit limits still decide what you spend.
